ABBREVIATIONS:  HRS = Hawaii Revised Statutes         HCJDC = Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center

HAR = Hawaii Administrative Rules        DCCA = Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs         BOARD = Board of Private Detectives and Guards

STEP 1. COMPLETE THE North Tier Security Solutions. 8-HOUR CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION Click here for online class requirements and rules. All  North Tier Security Solutions classes are held online using Zoom, they can be attended from anywhere with an internet connection.

The law requires applicants to successfully complete eight (8) hours of classroom instruction and pass a written test conducted by a Board approved provider. Transcend Inc. is Hawaii’s premier provider of Board Approved Security Guard Instruction. We include detailed information on the registration process. After successful completion of the online classroom instruction and test, Transcend Inc. will issue a Certificate of Instruction approved by the State of Hawaii for to apply for the GDE license (“guard card”).

STEP 2. FINGERPRINTS BASED CRIMINAL CONVICTION HISTORY CHECK

A fingerprint based criminal conviction background check is required. This done by a company called “Fieldprint” which will charge their current fees. To make a fingerprinting appointment go to www.Fieldprinthawaii.com. You can use the Next Steps guide in the Helpful Info section for details on scheduling an appointment. Once fingerprinted you do not receive the results, the information is sent directly to the State of Hawaii.

STEP 3. SUBMIT A GUARD EMPLOYEE REGISTRATION APPLICATION & FEES

The final step is to submit a Guard Employee Registration application to the Board. The preferred way is to submit it online (see information under the Helpful Info tab). The paper form can be printed out and submitted. The following is needed along with the form; make sure that all names on all documents in the application package match:

1. Complete the GDE form, making sure to answer all questions.  If you answer “Yes” to question #3 and/or #6 you must include the required information as noted on the form.
2. Upload with the application (or submit with paper form) a copy of the Transcend Inc. Certificate of Instruction. If needed, additional documentation in response to question #3 and/or #6.
3. Pay the fees in effect at the time of application

After successful processing the DCCA will issue a GDE Registration Number (guard card), usually within 15-20 business days.

Please note: effective April 18, 2019 the DCCA no longer mails a paper guard card to successful applicants. They will send an email with your GDE number. For instructions on how to print a paper wallet card or to save the “guard card” as a digital image go to our Helpful Info tab and scroll down to How To Print An Initial Or Replacement Guard Card.
